The Suit of Wands corresponds to the element of Fire and represents energy, inspiration, and the impulse to act. In the Rider–Waite deck, created by A. E. Waite and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith, Wands symbolise movement, initiative, and the drive to bring ideas into reality. These cards are associated with creativity, enterprise, and the courage to begin new ventures. In earlier decks, the suit was known as Sceptres.

This interpretation is rooted in the esoteric system of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, from which much of the Rider–Waite symbolism derives. Within this framework, Wands correspond to the element of Fire and the Kabbalistic world of Atziluth, the World of Emanation. The suit therefore represents the primary force of will, inspiration, and creative impulse.

All Minor Arcana are mapped to the Tree of Life based on their number. The Wands, being of the Element of Fire, are all mapped to the World of Atziluth, whose colour system is known as the King Scale.

The Ace of Wands expresses the pure root of this fiery energy. The numbered cards from Two to Ten show how this force develops as it moves through the ten Sephiroth of the Tree of Life, revealing different stages in the expression of will and creative activity. The Court Cards represent distinct modes of directing and embodying this energy.

In readings, Wands often appear when action, initiative, or personal drive is required. The suit traces the movement from inspiration to manifestation, showing how intention becomes activity. The Golden Dawn system further refines these meanings through astrological correspondences, adding additional layers of symbolic structure to each card.
