The Five of Swords —Knowing When to Walk Away

There is an old saying my grandmother used to repeat: “Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.”

The message behind this simple phrase carries an important lesson about conflict. Some battles cannot be won in any meaningful way. Even if a person manages to prove their point or dominate the situation, the cost may outweigh whatever satisfaction victory brings.

This idea resonates strongly with the symbolism of the Five of Swords. At first glance, the central figure appears to have won. He holds the swords while the others walk away. Yet the atmosphere of the card does not feel like a celebration. The outcome feels uneasy, as if the victory itself has created distance, resentment, or loss.

In many situations, conflict escalates because neither side is willing to step back. Positions harden, communication breaks down, and the original issue becomes less important than the desire to win. The Five of Swords often reflects this dynamic — a moment when the struggle itself becomes the focus.

This is where the wisdom behind my grandmother’s saying becomes relevant. Not every argument deserves our energy. Sometimes the most powerful decision is not to engage at the same level as the other person. Walking away does not always mean defeat; it can also mean recognising when a conflict will only drag both sides further into unnecessary tension.

The Five of Swords therefore asks an important question: what is truly gained by continuing the fight?

The card can serve as a reminder to examine the nature of the conflict itself. Is it leading toward understanding, or simply toward deeper division? Is the goal resolution, or merely the satisfaction of proving someone wrong?

Knowing when to stand your ground is important. But knowing when to step away can be just as valuable. Sometimes the wisest move is not to wrestle with the pig at all.
